This month I decided to watch the video interviews on CreativeLive by Chase Jarvis and get some daily inspiration, motivation and wisdom. I’ve decided to blog about the series, logging my thoughts and takeaways…
Day 14 creative genius – Sir Mix-A-Lot.
I think we all know who Sir Mix-A-Lot is from his music success, but I did not know his beginnings and his story. It’s fascinating and amazing and really humbling. I think it’s amazing how honest and open he is about how he felt, what he knew or didn’t know. I think I would like him as a person, not just his music.
Real creators are not copycats.
If you steal from one person, you are stealing. If you steal from everybody it’s research.
Value your art.
Keep it real.
Those are the big points that I have taken away and it was interesting to hear the tidbits of how Sir Mix-A-Lot giving props to Taylor Swift for her open letter and diving a bit into politics and race issues. Interesting conversation, smart points, really good stuff basically.

This month I decided to watch the video interviews on CreativeLive by Chase Jarvis and get some daily inspiration, motivation and wisdom. I’ve decided to blog about the series, logging my thoughts and takeaways…
Day 13 creative genius – Gabrielle Bernstein.
I’ve certainly heard of Gabrielle Bernstein before, but never really got into following her. I don’t know much about her beginnings and work, but even the brief intro goes to show that she was a driven person and successful in her arena, even before she set out to do what she is famous for today. There’s something to be said about folks who just go for it. They obviously have the drive in them.
Although I wouldn’t consider myself a woo woo kind of person, I certainly understand there is power in those types of practices. I was really caught in Bernstein’s advice that goes something like – Intend to see with the lens of love, because you can reorganize your thoughts.
Seeking creative solutions.
It’s so true that really it’s all about looking for a solution, differently. Reframing or whatever you want to call it. Being creative about everything that you have to deal with in life, right?
This point really made me rethink what I always considered a bit too woo-woo methods and how they can possibly help with real world life situations. I was simply too quick to judge, I suppose. What do you think?

Day 12 creative genius – Jared Leto.
Famous actor and musician, you’ve heard of Jared Leto, right? As with many of the folks in this interview series, Leto talks about the opportunity we have these days. The access and ability for all of us to do our own thing. There are no gatekeepers, like back in the day.
We live in a wonderful time.
Oh so true. It takes a bit of gratitude to see how much we really have today and to appreciate it, rather than focusing on the bad. There was also another big point that made me pause and rewind to listen again.
You don’t have to do things well in order for them to be worthy.
Leto is talking about how the reward for doing something can be that it’s fun or anything else. You don’t have to be the best, necessarily. It’s like exploring the jack of all trades idea and really understanding it a bit more, rather than the blanket statement of doing too much or spreading yourself too thin.
It makes sense to dig in a bit deeper… to consider everything you do and what it brings you. What it does for you. Interesting and food for thought, for sure. And for a final takeaway thought, Leto said:
I succeed a little bit because I fail a lot. That’s a fact.
More wisdom for any creative who struggles with failure. I understand that we need to create a lot and curate. People only see the success, but often don’t notice all the work that goes around it. Quantity leads to quality, don’t you think?

This month I decided to watch the video interviews on CreativeLive by Chase Jarvis and get some daily inspiration, motivation and wisdom. I’ve decided to blog about the series, logging my thoughts and takeaways…
Day 11 creative genius – Kelly Starrett.
This is the first guest so far that I actually know nothing about. Completely new to me, Kelly is a mobility expert and coach. Basically, he’s all about maintaining one’s body – health and exercise. He likes to say, what does it mean to be human?
Pain and posture are correlated.
Jarvis mentions that sitting is the new smoking – a really bad, unhealthy habit. And it’s not just about going to the gym. It’s actually about how we live, all the non-exercise activity that burns more calories. We really just need to move and every little bit counts.
It really made me think about the Asian culture and how we tend to squat a lot and sit on the ground… and how that is a good thing. I look at my parents and how much more agile they are compared to many others their age, simply because of their lifestyle and choices in movement throughout life.
As with many things nowadays, we are realizing that crash course attempts to “better” some part of ourselves is not sustainable or the easiest way to tackle issues. Like crash diets, right? Nope. It’s got to be a lifestyle change. If you can work it into your lifestyle, then it’ll really make a difference. You will change your life.
This interview and the concepts introduced really changed the way I think about moving my body. It’s not that I have to devote hours and hours to going to the gym. I guess that is why the fitbit is so popular these days? What do you think?

Day 10 creative genius – Gary Vaynerchuk.
Intense. Extreme. That’s Gary for you. I have followed him here and there, but he is really intense. The only thing I don’t jive very well with is the profanity, although it’s just his natural way. Regardless, he knows a lot and says it like it is.
Stop complaining. Hustle.
That was a big point and he’s basically trying to say that those who complain, just aren’t spending their time properly. Like Mark Cuban, Vaynerchuk talks about how the one thing we can really control is our own effort or time. You put the time in, because you can do that. There is no gatekeeper on that, but yourself.
Control what you can control.

Day 9 creative genius – Sir Richard Branson.
Amazing guy who seems so laid back for all the successes and experiences he has had. It was interesting to listen to his passions, experimentations and risks taken.
Some big takeaways include the satisfaction of trying and going for it, rather than regretting not doing something. I also love the general overview thought from Branson about doing something that makes peoples’ lives better. That’s good enough cause.

Day 8 creative genius – Brené Brown.
A researcher and expert in shame, vulnerability and all that stuff that doesn’t seem like science, but truly is the importance science of our emotions and inner workings as humans. I’ve followed Brené for quite some time and read many of her books. I find all her work totally fascinating and fun to learn about!
I’m pretty sure I’ve blogged about Brené before and her famous TED talks. In this interview, Brown talks about the topics around her new book Rising Strong.
What story are you making up? What’s true? And what do you really need to know more about?
That is pretty much the crux of what she is trying to teach us. To recognize our own emotions and reactions and how to deal with difficult situations.
I agree with Jarvis when he comments about how amazing it would be if we had these types of life tools earlier in life! She talks about understanding trust and what BRAVING stands for as well. And finally…
Not using your creativity is dangerous.
What an interesting thought. Because yes, if you suppress your creativity, it will brew and bubble into something bad over time. Yes!
Listening to Brown talk is like having a wise elders tell you the low-down on how life works. You’ll definitely get something out of this talk and highly recommend it.

Day 7 creative genius – Stefan Sagmeister.
A great design hero that I discovered when I was in university, way back in the day. At the time I was intrigued by his work but also was a bit standoffish because I couldn’t exactly relate to his art show topics. Maybe it was my youth!
It was interesting to listen to the interview discussion, but I think the takeaway for me was regarding his one year sabbatical every seven years. No, not that it’s amazing or whatever that he does this in his business… but that his year of sabbatical is NOT sitting on a beach relaxing or “wasting time” because he has no work to do. Nope. He has a regimented schedule to keep him exploring and “working.”
Hmm… that is something to ponder. So his sabbatical year is really like a research year, in my mind. Interesting.

Day 6 creative genius – LeVar Burton.
I know LeVar Burton from Reading Rainbow and then Star Trek. Learning more about his experience made me even more respectful and in awe of him. Wow. Talk about amazingness.
The interview was an inspiring and interesting discussion and I think my biggest takeaway is about how he kept on going even though it seemed as if he reached the pinnacle of success, so many times.
Fake it until you make it? But do we ever really make it?
That’s the thought that ran through my head while listening to the interview. Perhaps it’s about enjoying the entire process and always striving to do your best, rather than thinking there is a destination to reach. Because even if you get there… then what?
Now let me go and watch some old episodes of Reading Rainbow 🙂
